The Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) elected its new Speaker today for the 28th term.

The AK Party and MHP nominated Numan Kurtulmuş as their candidate, while the CHP group selected Tekin Bingöl as their nominee. Cihan Paçacı participated in the election as the candidate of the Good Party.

The Workers' Party of Turkey nominated Şerafettin Can Atalay, the imprisoned MP from Hatay, as its candidate. Tülay Hatimoğulları Oruç, the MP from Adana, was the candidate of the Green Left Party.

DEVA Party's Istanbul MP Mustafa Yeneroğlu and the Future Party's Antalya MP Serap Yazıcı Özbudun were also candidates for the position of Speaker of the Parliament.

The General Assembly of the Parliament convened to elect the new Speaker, and the voting was held in secret.

In the first round of the Speaker election, none of the candidates received 400 votes. Numan Kurtulmuş received 317 votes, Tekin Bingöl 131, and Cihan Paçacı 42 votes.

In the second round, none of the candidates could obtain the required majority of votes.

AK Party Istanbul MP Numan Kurtulmuş was elected as the Speaker of the Parliament in the third round with 321 votes. (ILKHA)
